MEET THE ARTIST
I am an artist who works with mixed media; pen and ink, pencil and charcoal and watercolors. My process involves sketching outside in all seasons and all weather.
My work has evolved from a process learned while studying for my degree in Landscape Architecture in Edinburgh, Scotland. Here the emphasis was on exploring place through onsite experience and drawing: sketching was a form of note taking, a way of recording and gathering knowledge about a place to inform and inspire design ideas. This practice remains a core part of my art journey.
I walk and sketch every day, observing the ecosystems I travel through. I am particularly interested in the extraordinary intricacy of the changes I observe in the landscape, both seasonally and annually. I am fascinated with discovering the colors and patterns of the natural world. The places I visit repeatedly deepen my understanding and experience of them.
I have participated in various private art shows over 20 years and my work is in private collections, mainly in BC but also across Canada and in England. I recently completed an Art Residency at Gods Mountain Estate, Skaha Lake, Penticton. There I explored different approaches to sketching and the way an unfamiliar environment affects my process. My work is currently on show at The Brain Art Gallery and Studio on Gore Langdon Road, Cowichan Bay.
